Lifeguards earn 5-star rating achievement
July 30, 2024
The Bend Park and Recreation District’s aquatics team has achieved a top rating for the quality of its lifeguarding staff at the Juniper Swim & Fitness Center and Larkspur Community Center.
BPRD’s Lifeguard certification program is through StarGuard Elite which recently conducted an unannounced audit and awarded a 5-star rating. This is the first 5-star rating for BPRD’s facilities and is the highest score possible.
The StarGuard audit is an assessment of the conduct of lifeguard staff on a day-to-day basis without advanced notice that they would be tested.
“This remarkable accomplishment is a testament to your unwavering dedication and commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and excellence,” noted the StarGuard report. “Your meticulous attention to documentation, superior drowning recognition training, and impeccable physical facility observations have set a new benchmark for excellence.”
“This achievement is not only a reflection of your competence but also of your passion and determination to excel in every aspect of your operations,” the report added.
The audit results highlighted outstanding performance in every critical area, including lifeguard observations, skills, and scenarios. The auditor performed a surveillance of the lifeguard team at Juniper and Larkspur facilities to ensure lifeguards are vigilant and attentive.
Many of the lifeguards observed were hired recently. At least 5 of the 8 lifeguards were hired this summer, according to Shannon Gilman, BPRD aquatics supervisor.
“I am very proud of the lifeguarding team and Heather James, our lifeguard supervisor, because this rating is a direct reflection of our high-quality training efforts and the importance of the role of lifeguards,” said Gilman.
The district pays for lifeguard certification, which includes three hours of an online class and 24-28 hours of classroom and in-water training, and is currently hiring lifeguards. Learn more about lifeguard jobs on the webpage.
